What do I have to do to ride a motorcycle?

The quickest way to get on 2 wheels is to do a CBT (compulsory basic training) course. This validates the provisional entitlement on your licence for 2 years and allows you to ride a restricted moped if 16 years of age, or a 125cc motorcycle/scooter1 if 17 years or over. You will still be classed as a learner and will have to have ‘L’ plates on the front and back of your machine. You cannot use motorways or carry passengers. After 2 years, you will need to re-take your CBT in order to continue riding as a learner2.

If you want to obtain a full motorcycle licence, you will need to have a valid CBT and take a motorcycle theory test before taking your full practical test. The theory test comprises 50 multiple choice questions and a hazard perception element where you click on developing hazards in video clips. The theory test is valid for 2 years and we sell the software to help you practice and revise for this test.

Your practical test can be done on a 125cc motorcycle (A2), or a 500cc (≥46.6bhp) motorcycle (DAS) if you are 21 years of age or over. If you pass your test on a 125cc machine, you will be restricted to 33bhp for 2 years. After 2 years, or if you took your test on a 500cc machine, you can ride a motorcycle with any power output.

  1. Not exceeding 14.6bhp
  2. If you obtained your full car driving licence before February 2001, you do not have to do a CBT to ride a 50cc moped.
