Enhanced rider scheme

Not all road traffic accidents involving motorcycles are due to rider error, however, motorcyclists are the most likely to be injured or killed in such accidents. The enhanced rider scheme (ERS) has therefore been developed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) in association with the motorcycle industry to try and reduce accidents involving motorcyclists. This scheme has been designed to improve the skills of riders who already hold a full motorcycle licence, regardless of motorbike size and previous rider experience.

During this course we will instruct you on many aspects of advanced motorcycle riding including cornering techniques, advanced observations, defensive riding techniques, road positioning and overtaking skills.

Unlike some advanced courses, there is no final test with the enhanced rider scheme. Your riding will be assessed by your instructor. Upon completion of the course requirements, you will receive a certificate which may earn you discounts on your insurance.

The first step is to book your ERS assessment. Upon completion of the assessment, you may be awarded your DSA certificate of Competence – enhanced rider bonus, if your riding is already at the required standard. If further training is required, we will construct a personal training plan, tailored to your individual needs, to reach the required standard.

Included in the ERS courses are:

If you have your own equipment/motorcycle, please feel free to use them for your training as we want you to feel as comfortable as possible.

To be eligible for our enhanced rider scheme training course you must already hold a full motorcycle licence. You will need to bring your driving licence (if it is a photo-card style licence you will also need the paper counterpart).
