Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)
CBT is a course of compulsory basic motorcycle training which must be completed before a learner moped or motorcycle rider is allowed to ride unaccompanied on the road with L-plates (D-plates in Wales). The CBT was introduced in 1990 to help reduce the very high accident rate among inexperienced motorcyclists.
You will need to complete CBT if:
- you want to ride a moped (engine not over 50cc with maximum design speed not exceeding 50km/h (approx 31mph)
- you want to ride a motorcycle
Throughout the course of the CBT, you will have to complete five elements, these are listed below:
- Introduction, eye sight check, history of the CBT
- Helmet and clothing, motorcycle controls, daily and weekly motorcycle checks, pushing the motorcycle, starting and stopping the engine
- Pulling away & stopping, steering, gear changing (if applicable), slow control, emergency stops, simulated left & right turns
- Pre road ride instruction and briefing
- Minimum of two hours road riding
You will only move on to the next element when your instructor is satisfied you have learnt the necessary theory and demonstrated the practical skills to a safe basic level.
Once all five elements have been satisfactorily completed, a certificate of completion, called the DL196, will be issued. This is a legal document, which validates the relevant entitlements on your driving licence.
You will need to bring your driving licence (if it is a photo-card, you will also need the paper counter part) with you when you come for your CBT. Without your licence, we can not run the course.
If you intend to use your own motorcycle/moped for this course, please also bring your insurance documents with you.
